In this art space you find visual artists at work. The studio is home to a number of resident artists, where they produce, display and sell their artworks. Visitors are urged to browse thought the studio and watch the artists in action. This is a double story building that houses various art studios and resident artist of the centre.
This Durban-born artist has made a name for himself through woodcuts colour reduction. Shongwe’s use of colour and design lies predominant in his pastel drawings which usually maintain some symbolic value in relation to human emotion. He continues to investigate new terrain though the use of oil pastel. works more expressively as compared to decoratively
Woodcut prints artist who has exhibited at the African Art Centre, Art Room, NSA Gallery and the BAT Centre. He continues to perfect various techniques including oil pastel. Shangase is Durban-born artist who grew up in the Ntuzuma township, in KwaZulu Natal.
“At the age of eight, I was in Primary school and already doing pencil drawings,” confessed Shangase,” I
specialise in printmaking ”
He has been involved in the visual art career for the last five years.
“As an adult it all began with Saturday Art Classes [where?], after a while I grew into a printmaking. Maybe it is because it was a new art form for me; I find the process most interesting. It’s painting, but backwards.”
The 2006 solo exhibition at the BAT Centre’s Menzi Mchunu Gallery left an unforgettable memory in the heart and mind of the dedicated Shangase. Even more inspiring was his 3rd price award in an national visual art competition held by Gun Free South Africa.
